Bringing Fulmination 2023 to Life: How We Branded an Entire Conference Venue for Explosive Engineers
When the Institute of Explosives Engineers (IExpE) tasked us with branding their entire Fulmination venue- including the conference centre and parts of the hotel – we had one mission: make the event visually unforgettable, without leaving a trace. We overcame a wide range of surface challenges using specialist vinyls and clever installations to deliver a seamless, bold, and fully immersive brand experience.
The Brief: Full Event Branding for a High-Impact Audience
Fulmination is a major event in the explosives engineering calendar, and IExpE wanted their branding to speak volumes – across every touchpoint of the venue. From entrances to conference halls to high-traffic hotel zones, the branding needed to be bold, consistent, and temporary.
Challenges We Faced (And Crushed)
Branding a venue is one thing. Branding a venue with dozens of surfaces, textures, and materials is another story entirely. Here’s what made this project a technical triumph:
- Mixed Surface Materials
We had to apply vinyl to a range of surfaces – each reacting differently to adhesive. Smooth? Easy. Low-energy substrates? A problem. We had to carefully test and match the right material to each zone. - Clean Removal Required
Because the event was temporary, every graphic needed to be fully removable without damaging the walls, windows, or fixtures.- - Light Interference
Some areas had bright external light flooding in risking a washed-out look for vibrant colours. Blocking that required specialised materials.
Materials That Made It Happen
This job wasn’t one-size-fits-all. Here’s what we used to make sure everything stuck and nothing got damaged:
- Digitally Printed Vinyl (Removable Adhesive): Perfect for most standard surfaces where clean removal was key.
- Hi-Tack Vinyl: Used where general adhesive wouldn’t grip, particularly on low-energy surfaces where standard vinyl just fell off.
- Grey-Backed Adhesive Vinyl: Prevented sunlight from bleeding through and dulling the printed colours, essential for exterior-facing installations.
When Adhesives Weren’t an Option
Not all surfaces could be vinyl-wrapped. For certain areas, we pivoted to a clean and professional solution:
- Hanging PVC Banners
- Sewn with top and bottom pockets
- Weighted pole inserted at the base for perfect tension
- Suspended using a stainless steel cable system, ensuring a secure, high-end finish with zero damage to the space

The result? A fully branded venue that delivered serious impact while respecting the venue’s limitations. Every surface, banner, and graphic was planned for both visual power and easy takedown. No mess. No residue. Just clean execution from start to finish.
